Have you received an automated call offering you a deal on an extended
car warranty? These calls are being investigated by the Federal Trade
Commission which states that as these calls are randomly generated, the
company calling has no idea what car you are driving and so their
contention that your warranty is “about to expire” is a scam. Some
consumers have reported receiving these calls and they don’t even own a
car!
Over the last two years about 35 different companies have employed this
scam, generating over 300,000 complaints nationwide. The calls may come
to your land line or cell phone and may violate the “Do Not Call List”
if you have registered your telephone numbers on this list.
If you receive this type of call – hang up! Often the consumer is
offered an option to press a number on their phone to stop receiving
calls, but as there are so many scammers, this has little or no effect.
