Leroy Holguin was sentenced today for the illegal possession of weapons.
Holguin had a gun in his hand when Tulare police officers raided a
Tulare house during the execution of a search warrant. Five firearms,
including an assault weapon and a sawed-off shotgun, were found at the
house. Several drug pipes, scales, and numerous rounds of ammunition
were also seized.
Holguin, 34, pled no contest to four felonies: possession of an assault
rifle, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a
short-barreled shotgun, and possession of ammunition by a felon. Holguin
also admitted to violating his probation on a prior felony case and
admitted that he had a prior strike conviction.
Judge Gerald Sevier sentenced Leroy Holguin to serve eight years and
four months in prison for his crimes. Holguin will also have to pay a
restitution fine of $7,200. He will have to provide samples of his
blood, saliva, and thumb and palm prints pursuant to Penal Code section
296. Because Holguin has a prior strike conviction, he will have to
serve eighty percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Benjamin Taksa of
the District Attorney’s Office and was investigated by Detective Rosa
Moreno of the Tulare Police Department.
