District Attorney Tim Ward will host the 5th Annual Justice Run: 5k Race/1 Mile Walk at Granite Hills High School in Porterville on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015 at 8:30am, as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Family Services of Tulare County and the Central California Family Crisis Center. These organizations provide shelter and other services to victims of domestic violence and their children. The 2014 Justice Run welcomed over 450 participants and earned proceeds of $13,000. Proceeds fund housing and supportive services for victims and their families. These services include emergency assistance (transportation, food, etc.), counseling, long-term housing support, and legal assistance. There will be donation bins at the Justice Run for the collection of unopened toiletry items (hotel-sized shampoo, lotion, and soap) which are frequently needed, as they are provided to those seeking shelter.
“Domestic violence is an assault against the very fabric of our society, the family. It has far-reaching and devastating effects, resulting in mental and physical trauma to women and children that seriously affect our community and schools. These effects have led me to create an enhanced prosecution team that will triple the number of prosecutors who focus exclusively on prosecuting those who would attempt to harm our families and our way of life. The Office of the District Attorney is taking a greater stand against domestic violence. Please join me in standing up against domestic violence by lending your support,” states District Attorney Tim Ward.
If you work for a Tulare County law enforcement agency or fire department, you are invited to participate in the Justice Run as a competition between agencies. The first team member who crosses the finish line will receive a plaque for their agency to commemorate the event.
Partner agencies will have informational booth displays at the park and the Office of the District Attorney will provide information on their Victim/Witness Assistance Program.
Participants can register now through race day. Registration costs $25 per person for those who register before October 16th, and it includes an event “tech” shirt and goody bag. Registration is $30 after October 16th. Late registrations may not receive a shirt.
There are a few ways to register: Registration forms can be downloaded from this page (see link above) to mail in; you may register online on Active.com using a credit card (see link above - a small processing fee will be applied to online registrations); you may also register in-person at the Victim/Witness Assistance Division of the Office of the District Attorney.
