  Assault Against Peace Officers

Violence against peace officers is increasing both in number and in severity.  The seriousness and complexity of cases often stress limited resources.  In response to this growing trend, the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office established a specialized unit in 2003 to prosecute major assault crimes against peace officers.

The Crimes Against Peace Officer Vertical Prosecution Unit (CAPO) consists of a felony experienced Deputy District Attorney backed by the District Attorney’s Bureau of  Investigation.   The CAPO attorney works closely with specialized vertical prosecution units in the areas of gang violence suppression, sexual assault, domestic violence and major narcotics trafficking.  Besides securing a high rate of conviction, appropriate sentences, an objective of the unit is to develop protocols and techniques to enhance the success of CAPO prosecutions.  Ultimately, our office seeks to protect the lives of our law enforcement personnel and foster greater respect and recognition for peace officers.
